Shared Note

Yates- On August 17. 1943. Thomas Yates aged 73 years, of 71, Park Avenue, Chadderton, Oldham. At rest. Interment St. Matthew's Chadderton, 3 O`clock on Saturday August 21.
The Chronicle- ‎(August?)‎___T 21 1943.
Terribly depressed, and driven almost frantic with ceaseless pain he was suffering, a Chadderton man 73 years old, Thomas Yates, of 71, Park Avenue, Chadderton took his own life. The Rochdale Coroner ‎( Mr S Turner)‎ returned a verdict accordingly at the Chadderton inquest on Friday. Mrs Stringer of 69 Park Avenue said that her father, a retired iron moulder, had lived alone since his son was called up. He had been normally healthy until 2 years ago. Since then he had been under treatment by doctors and at the Christie Hospital but had showed no improvement. Often he suffered great pain, and was worried because of his condition. She visited his house about noon on Monday and found a note on the living room table. It was in her fathers handwriting and said. " I can't stand the pain any longer. Beware of the gas." She found him in the house alive and there was no smell of gas. She asked him about the note, but he said that he had forgotten to move it. He was having a little rehearsal and wanted to see if she would see it in that position. She saw a doctor who prescribed pills and medicine and he was told that the incident would be forgotten, and that he should not take any rash steps. She saw him again in the evening and on the Tuesday morning at about 10 O`clock she noticed his black out was still up. She did not worry however because he sometimes stayed in bed until dinner. When she went into his house at midday, she could smell gas and there was a note on the table. According to the Coroner, who did not read out the note. It suggested he intended to do himself some injury and again complained about the terrible pain.
I AM WORSE.
William Harvey, licensee of the Chadderton Armes Hotel, said that Yates, whom he knew quite well was on the premises on Monday night. He said to him " How are you Mr Yates?" The reply was " Mr Harvey, I am worse"
David Sheffield‎(?)‎, of 22, Park Gate Chadderton, window cleaner, said that he was approached by Mrs Stringer on Tuesday and entered the house. He found Yates with his head in the gas oven in which were two cushions. The last time he saw him, the deceased said " David I've gone through a Hell of a night."
The Coroner recording that Yates committed suicide while his mind was disturbed said that no doubt he had suffered great pain and it had caused the depression. A man in his normal condition would not have said that he was rehearsing and there was only one thing that he could have been rehearsing for and that thing had happened the day after.
Died on the anniversary of his wifes death ‎( Muriel Brierley)‎
