--------------*--------------
NORTH countrymen are proverbially famous for their love of sport,
and a fine specimen of the northern sporting gentleman is
Colnel Alfred Septimus Palmer, of 3, Victoria Square, New-
castle. Colonel Palmer is a well-known racing man and a
familiar figure at all the leading north-country meetings.
But racing is by no means the sole sport in which he takes a keen practical
interest. On the contrary he is a fairly regular attendant at the leading cours-
ing meetings, and almost invariably contrives to witness the running for the
Waterloo Cup. He is also a first-rate game-shot, and takes more than a pass-
ing interest in cricket and football.
A Novocastrian born and bred, Colonel Palmer was educated at Edin-
burgh University. Though devoted to sport, the gallant gentleman has by no
means made it the raison d'etre of his existence, au contraire he has taken an
active part in municipal affairs, holding many public offices of importance.
Inter alia' he is chairman of the Felling Local Board and School Board, and
Chairman of the Gateshead Guardians. An Alderman of the Durham County
Council, he presides as Chairman over the debates of the Works Committee,
whilst he has for many years been a Justice of the Peace for the County of
Durham.
Always a supporter of the Volunteer movement, Colonel Palmer has sup-
ported precept with practice, having for many years commanded the New
castle Royal Engineer Volunteers.
Colonel Palmer married Miss E. J Wilkinson. Politically he is a Liberal
whose principles are in harmony with the spirit of the times and the progress
of the age in which we live.
