Palmer Memorial Hospital
A beautiful glass window installed in the original hospital by public subscription in 1865 is preserved in one of the staircase windows. It is a memento from the old hospital which commemorates a woman whom history may otherwise have forgotten had it not been for the gratitude, a century ago, of employees of Palmer Company.
It reads:-
'In memory of Jane, the beloved wife of C M Palmer, Esq of Whitley Bay who died 6 April 1865, aged 43 years. Erected in Grateful Remembrance of her many acts of kindness by workers of Palmer Brothers and Company and friends.'
Jane Palmer died at the early age of 43 in 1865, the year in which the shipbuilding and Ironworks at Jarrow founded by her husband and his brother became a limited company, with a capital of a million sterling. The stained glass window was put up by Palmers workers when the old hospital was built in 1870 to commemorate her many acts of kindness. She died in Newcastle and at her funeral four days later the bells of St. Nicholas Cathedral tolled.
Two days later at a meeting of the Palmer employees the idea of sending their employer a letter of condolence was discussed and a decision was made to compile a suitable letter to Mr Palmer. This never materialized, however, a window was duly commissioned and made by the Tyne Plate Glass Company. It cost £1,100- a huge sum.
