William Onslow, bachelor, of this parish, to Mary Edwards, spinster of this parish, by banns 30 July 1794, ceremony by E. Evans clerk, witnesses: John Onslow (X) and Thomas Kynaston (X). Possible father or grand-father of your William 58 years in the 1881 census???
Herewith Onslow/Owen marriages/witnesses found during my recent transcription task 1737-1866, original Ellesmere parish registers.
p207/414 William Onslow, full age, widower, slater of Duddleston to Jane Griffiths, full age, spinster (there were some Griffiths married to my Masons of Ellesmere, but I don't think I have taken all of them down) 20 Apr 1863 by John Peake, curate of Ellesmere. Father of groom, William, slater; father of bride, Edward, labourer. Witnesses: George Pierce and Ann Pierce.
From the previous email you sent me, isn't it likely that Jemima's husband was William Onslow, somehow connected to the William Onslow's above? If that 1881 census is the correct family??? A slater and a builder are not too far apart in form of employment, and could possibly be the same, or one could have easily upgraded from a slater to a builder, given time and experience. Is it possible that the widower, William Onslow, became a widower again not long after his second marriage and then married Jemima? Very interesting, I think, that in the 1881 census at Little Cross Lanes, Ellesmere, the son Thomas is shown as a slater!

Just finished the baptisms Ellesmere 1803-1812 today (again, original registers) and came across the following:-
Regards, Graham ( This could be Williams first wife.)
Ellesmere parish 1765-1825. Also baptisms 1813-1825. Well, there wasn't much for you, but I did find the following:
p67/668. 29 Nov 1822. Margaret Onslow of Liverpool, buried, aged 20 yrs, by John Gaunt, curate of Ellesmere. The Onslows certainly were not into being buried at St. Mary's Ellesmere!
Good hunting

"Hi all Hope you got the copy of birth cert Just in case you coud not read it.b.2nd Nov 1839 M. Anne Owens nee Taylor. L Place Gully Lane ,St. Martins.
There's your connection Gill to Ascot house.
I found William Onslow married in1841 (father william) m. to Elizabeth Griffiths f. Edward Grifiths at Ruabon.
No month given. Not a lot more on Jemima's m. cert. other than what I copied.
still can't find her on 51 or 61 census.
Ros" "Thanks Ros.
It looks very likely that Williams second wife Jane is the sister of his first wife Elizabeth. On the IGI there is a Jane and older sister, Elizabeth, children of Edward and
Elizabeth Griffiths. Jane is baptised 15/04/1826 and Elizabeth 3/06/1821 at Ellesmere.
The 1851 census will be very revealing as the only marriage on the IGI for a Thomas Owen and Mary Taylor at this time is in 1829 at Manchester Cathedral On the 1841 census Thomas says he was not born in county whereas Anne says she is! How Welsh are we!!!!?!!!!!
We need that 1851 census to tell us where they are from before we can go any further.
Does anyone know where the Gully Lane in the parish of St Martins actually is and if it still exists?
Gill"
