Latham was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. He had a second class Hons in mathematics ‎(seems unusual for 1850s since Harrow hardly taught Maths when Latham was there)‎ and was then ordained. Latham married Harriette Dorothea Townshend. He became head of Twyford School in 1862 after working as an assistant master.
