He went to Ruabon Grammar School but had to leave as his parents couldn't afford to keep him there. He worked as a general labourer, mostly in the brickworks. He died of a heart attack on 28/1/1942 in Penybryn and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Ruabon ‎(gravestone marks the place)‎
